100 years ago, Alfred Stiglitz promoted the artistic quality that was unique to photography, and the medium has slowly come to be acknowledged as a field of the fine arts. It goes without saying that photography is a practical medium and not limited only to the realm of artwork. Yet museums all over the world have collected photographs from an artistic perspective ever since the establishment of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1940. Photos that were initially shot as documents, by Henri Cartier-Bresson, for instance, are now held by museum collections to be appreciated as artworks.
"20th Century Photography" is a retrospective exhibition that looks at the course of 20th century photographic history, focusing on photographs from the collections of the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, the Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum of Art in Osaka, in addition to works from the collection of the Chiba Museum of Art. Featuring over 180 works by 80 artists such as Stiglitz, Man Ray, Eugene Atget, Ansel Adams, Cartier-Bresson and more.
