Nobuaki Takekawa
Nobuaki Takekawa received his BA in oil painting from Tokyo National University of Arts and Music in 2002. He has held several solo exhibitions at Ota Fine Arts as well as AKIMAHEN! in Lille, France in 2004, and a group exhibition of Portrait Session at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007.
This exhibition will show a combination of his latest paintings from the "Cicada’s eclosion" series, and "I," a new painting and installation work. In both these works, Takekawa combined portraits of his family or himself and the repeating timelines of the seven years that Cicadas spend in the ground by the day of their eclosion. The other paintings and installation work were inspired by manila clams. He used its shell pattern, called Zonate Spot, as the motif of these two works.
Takekawa is interested in the decorative qualities and scenery that emerge thanks to the accumulation of time. His work seems to suggest to viewers that humankind's original scenery comes from nature. The yacht installed on the floor of the gallery shows annual rings in the manila clam's Zonate spot pattern, a sort of metaphor for time travel.
