"'Vibrational Force' Electricity Generation Experience at Shibuya Hachiko Plaza"

Shibuya Station
Finished
Shibuya Ward is conducting an experiment to demonstrate a newly-developed next-generation green energy system called "Shindoryoku Hatsuden™" for a 20-day period starting December 5th. This project is the first large-scale urban project staged outdoors in public areas that will involve autonomous bodies, local commercial associations in the area around Shibuya station, various community enterprises, as well as creative individuals.

The "Hachiko" plaza in front of Shibuya station typically sees upwards of 900,000 people pass through on a weekday (700,000 on a weekend or holiday) - the busiest area with the most traffic in Shibuya Ward. This experimental demonstration will use a special "Hatsuden-yuka™" flooring material that will convert vibrations into energy - a technology that is still in its earliest stages throughout the world. This energy-generating device will be installed in certain parts of Hachiko plaza, using the energy generated from passing pedestrians to power the LED lights for the holiday illumination displays in the area. Because the amount of energy generated and LED illumination duration will vary in response to the foot traffic at any one time, this is in effect a sort of "energy donation" from passers-by.

The "Hatsuden-yuka™" will be buried into the surface of the road next to the Shibuya charter panel (across from and behind the entrance/exit to the Hanzomon subway line), and the amount of energy generated, energy generation efficiency, amount of foot traffic, durability and weather resistance will be monitored. Through this attempt at uncovering previously untapped sources of energy, new directions in green energy use using the vibrations from the heart of this city will be explored.
