Ai Fujiyoshi
"I want to see the borders of invisible things", says Ai Fujiyoshi (b. 1975). She visualizes this obsession in her work. Two years ago, she made her debut with the large-scale work "Swimming Pool" at Roppongi Weissfeld. The "water" that fills the pool was made of beautiful blue resin, and for the production of this piece, she set up a fund to cover the high cost. The piece actually didn't fit through the stairs of the gallery building because of its size and weight. In order to hold the exhibition, they removed the back wall and used a crane to install it. The tranquil and yet dynamic exhibition was received very well, and after the exhibition the work was included in a group exhibition at the Yokohama Museum of Art. The work is now privately owned.
Two years have passed since her previous exhibition, Fujiyoshi found a new motif, "roots". "Roots" are obviously a significant part of any kinds of plant, staying underground and out of sight in oder to play their role. Here again, she was driven by the conflicting idea of visualizing what we can't normally see.
This exhibition presents a large resin sculpture of roots hung from the ceiling, and new paintings by Fujiyoshi.
