Yumeji Takehisa
The Meiji and Taisho periods were the time when numerous girls' and women's magazines were published. In such a climate, Taisho romantic painter Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934) created paintings and poems that won hearts and minds of maidens of the time, delivering various messages to them through the pages of the magazines.

Maidens' highly-sensitive, delicate minds empathized with Takehisa's work, which exquisitely expressed uncontrollable feelings of love, yearning and loneliness that girls were experiencing. As a pioneer of romantic painters, Takehisa left his mark on the formation of girls' culture, influencing other lyrical painters as well as trends of the time.

Centering on Takehisa's poetic paintings that captivated hearts of countless girls, this exhibition invites the viewer to the lyrical world of maidens.
