11th edition of the "Exhibition Project: Secret Experiment Box".
Humans have been keenly sensitive of and attuned to various forms of energy that exist in nature since ancient times - energies that are evidence of divine spirits and souls that take up residence in mountains, rocks and trees, worshiped as repositories of divine presence, closely intertwined with the daily lives of people. At the same time, such energies are also the source of inexplicable beauty in a way. Nowadays, such beliefs are often seen as old superstition or religious holdovers, but Sugihara has taken up these themes in this exhibition and channeled their unique sensibility into his artwork, leaving viewers with a renewed appreciation of a natural aesthetic in nature.
"Maruishikura"
Round stones and rocks tossed about by the tide are said to be where souls reside. Formations of these rocks are reminiscent of stone circles from the Jomon era, where certain taiko (Japanese drum) festivals were held.
* There will be a performance by the artist, along with Gozo Yoshimashi and Sumika Yamagata, on May 6th (Tue) at sunset.
