Kiyohito Sekiguchi
Sekiguchi's urns have a stout, round body with large-petaled flowers glazed in a deep vermilion. These "shuirotsubo" (vermilion urns) are adorned with peony, pomegranate and rhododendron flower motifs, but their leaves have only a faint shadow or silhouette to them, giving the works a certain flat, simplified two-dimensional sense of design to them that appears somewhat deformed.

This particular shade of vermilion (shuiro), as well as brown and beige, calls to mind the vivid spectrum of colors in nature, conjuring up images of maps and landscape in a chaotic jumble, evoking an artless, offhand beauty. Sekiguchi uses batik and stencil dyeing techniques in order to achieve a unique palette of colors and emotional effects. Ceramic glazes and enamels are only sparingly used, sprayed onto the pieces, shaved off, and then reduction-fired to produce firing marks on the surface. This process is then repeated, giving the ceramics a certain cloth-like softness, a warmth of materials, as well as a texture similar to that of cotton cloth faded from washing. These works have a primitive vitality to them, like flowers bursting forth and blooming from parched earth.

Sekiguchi is a young artist who just graduated from the Master's program at the Tokyo University of the Arts in March this year. Initially attracted to patterns and color design elements, he started out interested in dyeing, but later turned to ceramics because of its natural warmth and earthiness. The "shuirotsubo" were born out of plant designs taken from dyeing, and the magnanimity and fresh vibrancy of earth. This exhibition features 7 new works that display a polish that has come to Sekiguchi's craft since his graduation exhibition in March this year.
