gelitin
Since 1993, gelitin, a Vienna based artist group, has been creating sensational and thought-provoking interactive projects. "Ideas are born from boredom"; their works always have a lively sense of childlike humor. What lies behind this humor, however, is the hard work of finding out how they want to live. Their work is often constructed out of daily, ordinary materials, and presented to viewers with a sense of mysterious and bizarre beauty.

At the La Louvre Paris exhibition last year, they were inspired by the Louvre Museum and its collection, paying homage to it. Ancient columns became toilet paper, archeological relics were turned into cheese and caramels. The anti-hierarchical spirit that animated the Dada movement lives on in gelitin’s anarchic passion for reinterpreting the structure of society, politics, and sex. Their works make us realize the importance of pursuing free expression and of not forgetting the pleasures of an unbridled imagination.

(E-mail from Ali, one of gelitin's members)
"The image on the invitation card is a friendly lady in an indescribable mood standing in front of Mount Fuji. She just came straight out of a relaxing holiday in the hot springs of Beppu and fell in love with one of the suffering kangaroos in a local zoo. Mount Fuji is soaring right on top of her head and she wears the mountain almost like a hat! This is one of the stories depicted with plasticine. We will exhibit some plasticine paintings, little sculptures, and also would like to present a stout installation on a Buddhist theme that incorporates our own interpretation."

What will the exhibition be like? Please do not miss these sensational artists’ first solo show in Japan.
