Ai Udagawa
Ai Udagawa has nurtured a consistent interest in the idea of utopia and developed this notion extensively in her work. This notion has become even stronger and more supple thanks to a three-year stint spent working and living in Germany.

Udagawa's basic approach is to use subtly-colored dyes on a base of white silk. These drawings represent a surge of sensation and life force that evokes various images. The semi-translucent world depicted by the faintly-dyed silk canvases that she uses are also a manifestation of the intimate relationship that exists at all times between the real world and the artist's sensibility.

In addition to these silk paintings, this exhibition also features installations composed of sculptures and porcelain figures of angels and mushrooms huddled together in birdcages made out of wisteria vines. The thoughts of the viewer are driven towards the birds drawn onto the silk cloth paintings in the background, while also being prompted to begin journey.
