Masumi Nakaoka
Masumi Nakaoka's paintings are often referred to as landscapes of no particular scene. Her irregular shapes construct absolutely new images while they also connect to something in our memory.

Nakaoka often takes photographs of scenes that she sees in everyday life. But she doesn't create her paintings based on the photos; photography is just a way to look at familiar scenes with a new angle as she passes by repeatedly. She layers semi-transparent resin paint over contours painted with vivid-colored acrylic and oil paint. In doing so, she replaces the painted motifs with a composition of colors and medium, turning her motifs into something unrecognizable. Even so, these shapes come forward to remind us of something in our memory.

Although we may not be looking at the same scenery as what the artist is seeing, Nakaoka's paintings prompt us to think of trees, mountains, or the sunlight filtering through trees and buildings we've seen before, calling to mind a landscape in our memory. In a sense, the landscape each viewer sees in her painting completes her work.

In this exhibition, ten new works, including not only the paintings based on the artist's personal sorrounings, but also paintings based on particular places that anyone would recognize, will be on display.
