Artists

Ichiro Fukuzawa
Born in Tomioka City, Gunma prefecture, Ichiro Fukuzawa (1898-1992) studied abroad in Paris from 1924 to 1931. Strongly influenced by surrealism during these years, Fukuzawa introduced its painting style to Japan, leaving a major mark as a painter on Japanese art history. Exploring various modes of expression in the postwar era, he continued to create large-scale works and series of works in a distinctive style incorporating criticism toward society and civilization, taking cues from history, myth and the stories of hell.

The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma holds a large collection of Fukuzawa's paintings donated by the artist himself. Although the museum has organized exhibitions of his work in 1976, 1988 and 1992, and has also introduced his representative works as part of a permanent exhibition after he passed away, there has been almost no occasion to offer a comprehensive view of the artist, whose painting style changed radically throughout his career. With the cooperation of Isezaki City Museum, Tomioka City Museum and Ichiro Fukuzawa Museum, this exhibition showcases not only the museum's collection but other works painted after the late 1970s. A total of 65 paintings covering the walls of the exhibition space will reveal through its panoramic view the stylistic transitions that this notable artist went through.
