"The Habsburg: Treasures of the Habsburg Monarchy" Exhibition

The National Art Center, Tokyo
Finished
This year marks the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In commemoration of this event, this exhibition showcases a total of 120 exquisite paintings and crafts associated with the Habsburg Monarchy from the collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (Austria) and the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts (Hungary).

The successive Hapsburg monarchs who reigned over Europe for over 600 years were all passionate art patrons. This exhibition introduces work by a total of 50 painters such as court painter Dürer, in-house artists Tiziano, Velázquez and Rubens, as well as Cranach, Raffaello, El Greco and Goya, offering a great opportunity for the viewer to trace the history of and grasp the quintessence of Western art from the 16th to 18th century.

Also on view are crafts created by the court artist for Rudolf II, armor and shields used by the monarchs, as well as books and gold relief maki-e shelves that Emperor Meiji sent to the monarch Franz Joseph I as a sign of friendship.
