Hiroko Higuchi "The Kissho Girls"
This event has ended.
At Art Lab Tokyo
Media: Painting, Art Party
Solo exhibition by Hiroko Higuchi, a "reverse import" artist who is currently enjoying a startling wave of popularity in Asia. Just like how it was the Europeans who first "discovered" ukiyo-e woodblock prints, Higuchi's art was first "discovered" by a foreigner. Instead of Japan, where critical reception for painting was for a long time not widely available, her paintings first gained recognition in Asia. Last year, Higuchi's work proved wildly popular at Art Taipei 2008 and Shinwa Art Auction in Macau.
The young girls standing in front of backgrounds that recall kimono patterns scattered with gold leaf bear clear traces of a subcultural background. They are not merely cute or "kawaii" - like Yoshitomo Nara's girl figures, their features betray a faint trace of mischief. Some of these girls offer a fleeting glimpse at their tiny nipples that peek out from their breasts; they are neither saint nor slut, exuding a bewitching charm that fills the canvas.
