Naoki Nishijima "Distance and Time"

Galerie Tokyo Humanité
Finished
Naoki Nishijima's new works are on display for the first time in two years. Nishijima used to create paintings of maple leaves and multi-layered abstract paintings, but he has switched to landscapes in recent years. The motifs used in his recent works include lake shores, mountain cottages and forests - images that almost everyone is somewhat familiar with. The scenery is depicted using a limited range of tones, such as bluish-grays or sepia. On top of the landscape, evenly spaced dots occupy the entire canvas, toying with the viewer's sense of depth. They also emphasize the objective role of the viewer, who overlooks and observes the flow of time. The landscapes are mundane scenery, and yet they rush into the deepest recesses of our mind.
