The Exhibition "Neoteny Japan" is now touring around Japan showing selected works by world-renowned Japanese artists from the collection of psychiatrist Ryutaro Takahashi. This exhibition will focus on a younger generation, the neo-neoteny generation, displaying works that reveal another facet of Takahashi's sumptuous collection.
Takahashi suggested both the theme of soushokukei (meaning herbivorous, it is used to designate males who are tendentiously less emotionally aggressive) and the division between male and female artists that allow for a useful viewpoint from which to understand the current Japanese art scene.
20 artist born from the late 60s to 80s were selected with a particular focus on painting. The abundance of portraits is apparent at first sight as well as a generally introvert attitude that strongly contrasts the valiance of the earlier generation championed by artists such as Takashi Murakami. It appears as if resistance has been renounced in order to float in personal microcosms.
