Yotaro Niwa
Yotaro Niwa was born on the island of Awajishima in Hyogo Prefecture in 1973. After completing graduate studies at Musashino Art University, he studied sculpture at Braunschweig University of Art in Germany. Niwa is currently based in Berlin as an overseas dispatch artist-researcher sponsored by the Ministry for Cultural Affairs, while also continuing to show his work at exhibitions all over the world. The exhibition spaces he creates are filled with inorganic objects like steel pipes and electric wires, as well as delicate and pliable items like plants and fabrics. These spaces can be read as an attempt to deny the viewer his or her comfortable expectations when it comes to viewing art.

On display at this exhibition is an installation that consists of bicycle tire tubes and light bulbs on top of a lace fabric that has been laid out on the entire surface of the floor. By combining various objects with no apparent logic or order to them, Niwa's installation gradually reveals its purpose: to disrupt the "planned, harmonious balance" that we have come to expect.

Various other events are scheduled over the duration of the exhibition. See website for details.
