Li Yan
This is Li Yan's (b. 1977, China) first solo exhibition in Japan. His work was acquired by the Saatchi Collection in London last year.
Using images and footage taken from everyday media, Li exhibits small rectangular paintings measuring about 25cm across assembled into a single work, featuring scenes of violence and war presented in the media as well as casual fragments from everyday life rendered with a fine, delicate touch and sense of color.
Li disrupts the original order and sequencing of the news as propagated by the media and recombines them like an editor in order to produce new groups of images. Through this process, he suggests new readings of the original topics. Subjects that tend to be ossified and fixed in their interpretation by their representation in the media are transformed and reconstructed through a means that allows for a more personal, individual understanding of these events.
Li divides his small works by topic and shows them in groups. Their size is also an important element of his practice - small-scale paintings for him have the ability to approach the global image he wishes to present in a direct, rapid way, and to represent efficiently ideas that surface in the space of an instant.
These scattered images are arranged in an asymmetrical manner that yet obeys certain rules, with brick-like connections between them that together make up a single piece of architecture, expressing a single concept. At the same time, each image has a presence of its own that speaks quietly and individually to viewers.
