Masakatsu Sashie "de facto standard"

Masakatsu Sashie
Masakatsu Sashie was born in Kanazawa in 1974, and is currently based there. He attracted attention for his participation in the group exhibition "Eyes and Curiosity vol. 4" last year, and his work enjoys a particularly passionate reception abroad.

Although Sashie works with the "typical" medium of oil on canvas, his paintings leave an especially indelible impression on viewers. A nostalgic, organically-linked urban landscape in the form of a sphere floats in the center of the canvas, or else towers above its surroundings. These scenes seem unfamiliar, but lying concealed within Sashie's detailed depictions are sights and spectacles that resonate with profound force within the viewer's memory.

The title of this exhibition, "de facto standard", is an economic term that refers to a standard that has achieved a dominant position through public acceptance or market forces. The subjects that Sashie portrays may once have been de facto standards peculiar to their time, but they now bear only a distant relation to contemporary "standards". Neither are they regarded as something valuable to be preserved, as with the exhibits in a natural history museum.

Although Sashie's works seem to possess a superficial charm, with their trick-like devices that toy with symbolic forms and presentations, his gaze, which fixes upon objects and things that seem to have been scooped up and salvaged from some neglected place, hold the latent potential to change the way we look at the world around us.
