Georges Bigot
French painter Georges Bigot (1860-1927) arrived in Japan at the beginning of the Meiji era. He drew the rapidly modernizing Japan curiously and amiably to present it to the Western world. Books such as "Croquis Japonais" present a vivid documentation of the observations by the freshly arrived Bigot, while others accurately capture the attitude of the Japanese at the time as they turned their backs to the beauty of Japan and confined themselves exclusively to copy the West.
His works drawn with empathy and compassion did not however sit well with the Japanese audience at the time that became increasingly critical. Bigot later returned to his country and made a debut as a satirical cartoon artist but had to do other illustration works to support himself.
This exhibition will present rare prints as well as the original copper plates used for "Croquis Japonais" together with photographs of the period to look at the Japan at that time which Bigot fell in love with.
