Artists

Hiroko Inoue
Hiroko Inoue is an artist active both in Japan and abroad who has spent upwards of 10 years on her lifework - a series of works that depict the windows of buildings that exist apart from mainstream society, such as mental institutions and reforms schools. Inoue began shooting this series after the Kobe earthquake of 1995, and soon extended the scope of her project to locations in Germany, Austria, Yemen and Alaska. These photos record places that were dragged into wars in the past, or the rooms of people who have sustained injuries and suffer even today. Caught behind inorganic steel bars and grids, trapped between walls and ceilings that look like parts of abandoned ruins, there are still futons and beds that bear traces of the presence of human warmth. Faced with the prospect of these closed spaces, viewers are made to realize the fact that true hope lies within connections forged between people.

"Inside-Out" is the meeting place of two perspectives that shed light on the signs of human presence that lie concealed in these windows: that based on our own lived experiences and the one seen through Inoue's camera shutter. Around 20 works are on display. In addition, the photo collection of the same name will be on sale.
