Naohisa Inoue
Inoue's "Ibarado" is a fictional city whose air shimmers with a magical cast. It is at once an unknown world and a place that conjures up a vague nostalgia for somewhere you have been before.

Just like how Kenji Miyazawa referred to Iwate prefecture as "Ihatov", Inoue calls the town of Ibaraki, where he lives, "Ibarado". "When I speak its name, the scene before my eyes transforms into an incredible land of fantasy", says Inoue. The area around the train station that he has seen a hundred times gets transfigured into a massive hillock, while the wheat field behind his house turns into a golden plain. Ibarado is an object lesson in how the world can take on a more interesting cast just by a slight shift in the way we look at it. Ibarado made a brief appearance in Hayao Miyazaki's 1995 animation film "Whispers of the Heart", where it was used as the background landscape for the hero's reveries.

This exhibition features new oil paintings that shed light on the process that unravels between the time that the idea first takes root in Inoue's imagination and the final completion of the work. Inoue's working process is unique in how he first conceptualizes colors and forms, after which he assigns meaning and significance to them - something that allows the viewer to gain a fuller appreciation of the fascinating and magical qualities of our beautiful world.
