Akiko Muto

Akiko Muto was born in 1975. She graduated from the doctoral course in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006 and has since extended the scope of her art practice both in Japan and abroad. Muto takes as her point of departure the memories of people that she meets unexpectedly over the course of daily life in order to create sculptural works using wood, FRP, terracotta and ceramics. Because she takes her inspiration from the memories of a different person each time, the form and material of her works changes accordingly. Muto creates her works in the uncertain gap that exists between herself and the people that inspire her practice. In these sculptures, which arise out of the fragmentary memories and thoughts of people other than herself, a sort of crevice or fissure that allows anyone easy access into this world emerges. In waiting for the visitor to take that step in approaching her work, Muto reconstructs the various elements invoked by the memory of others, and completes the work by turning it into a delicate world of her own.

"Anticipating the presence of my viewers, as well as the people who form its basis, provoke in me various sensations that leave me dangling," says Muto, whose works are born out of the to-and-fro between the memories of others and one's own personal point of view.
