Rosanjin Kitaoji (1883-1959) was an avid appreciator and creator of beauty and fine cuisine. Almost half a century since his passing, appreciation for his legacy has climbed even higher. In his ceramics, he combined the aesthetic of antiques with his own dynamic style and gained international recognition.
Born in Shake, Kyoto, Rosanjin started his career as an calligrapher and seal engraver, but socializing with his patrons spurred a fascination with fine cuisine and he soon became interested in ceramic plates and bowls. He started making ceramics in his 40s, but quickly established his distinctive style with a finely honed aesthetic taste. He did not limit himself to a particular style of ceramics such as Oribe, Shino, Seto or Bizen, and as a result was able to establish a unique body of work.
Rosanjin created ceramic bowls and plates to be used. Among the works on display at this exhibition, bowls from the old collection of the Kasama Nichido Museum of Art were actually used to serve food, while most of the pieces in their new Kashima collection have never been used. Rosanjin's attitude toward ceramic art can be discovered by comparing these works on display.
