The exhibition "Tibet: Treasures from the Roof of the World" is a comprehensive introduction to Tibetan culture that has received considerable attention worldwide, but is as yet fairly unfamiliar in Japan. We welcome visitors to this large-scale collection of fine arts being shown for the first time in Japan. It features works from palaces registered as World Cultural Heritage sites, temples, museums and other sources located in China’s Tibetan Autonomous Region and Chengde, Hebei Province.

Tibetan Buddhism was influenced by a school of Buddhist teachings different to the Indian mid-term esoteric Buddhist thought that was transmitted to Japan via China, along with statues, mandalas and Chinese sutras translated from Sanskrit texts, by Japanese monks like Saicho and Kukai. In Buddhist statues and Buddhist paintings, which are an indispensable part of Buddhist practice, the Tibetan Buddhas appear as revered deities who take distinctively Tibetan forms. We invite you to appreciate with your own eyes the fascinating differences between Tibetan Buddhist art and Japan’s Buddhist sculptures and paintings.

Every country on the face of the Earth now recognizes Tibet as an integral part of China. This is understandable. China is fast becoming the chief industrial powerhouse of the global economy, and it wouldn’t do to upset them now, would it? So, congratulations, President Obama, for snubbing that symbol of Tibetan defiance, the Dalai Lama, on his recent visit to the US.
