Fujiko Nakaya, doubleNegatives Architecture
Fujiko Nakaya is one of Tokyo's most prominent contemporary artists. She has worked with the collective Experiments in Art and Technology in New York in 1966, and at the World Expo in Osaka in 1970. Since then, she has accumulated several honors and engagements - at the Sydney Biennale in 1976, the Locarno Video Festival in 1990, abd the Yoshida Isoya Prize in 1992. Nakaya creates fog installations, gives performances, choreographs dances and designs parks. In recent years, she has multiplied her collaborations with Japanese and foreign dancers, architects and musicians.
MU: Mercurial Unfolding is an installation created in collaboration with Sota Ichikawa, director and architect of the firm doubleNegatives Architecture. The fog appears in the midst of nature through a system devised by Ichikawa that is able to visualize the variations in the fog cloud at any given instant. An invisible architecture, with the help of an information system christened "Corpora", encloses the fog in a fixed space. In the gardens of the Institute, these two processes will give concrete form to Nakaya's artistic installation, which also functions as an experimental micro-climate model.
