Costume Jewelry Exhibition

Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi - 7th Floor New Galleries
Finished
Costume jewelry began as an alternative or substitute to real jewelry for high society ladies from the wealthier classes, and soon developed to become a product within reach of ordinary people. Costume jewelry was supported by women who entered the workforce during the war, for example, and allowed women to acquire their own accessories. Initially, pieces in Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles were produced, but costume jewelry soon came into its own as a separate genre thanks to women like Coco Chanel from France and Miriam Haskell from America. Until then, jewelry design had been a male profession, but the manufacture of costume jewelry soon flourished along with the rise of women's status in society. This exhibition features "real" pieces by Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Miriam Haskell, Trifari, Joseph, Schiaparelli and Shreiner that highlighted and uplifted show dresses by male designers.
