"French Master of Ukiyoe Henri Riviere" Exhibition

Henri Riviere
Henri Riviere (1864-1951) is a painter and print artist who was strongly influenced by Japonism that became popular in the French art world towards the end of the 19th century. Fascinated by ukiyoe prints of Hokusai and Hiroshige, Riviere depicted French landscapes under the heavy influence of the ukiyoe masters. The resulting paintings and prints that capture the subtleties in nature and urban landscapes may feel somewhat nostalgic to a Japanese audience too.
Not many works by Riviere apart from the "36 views of the Eiffel Tower" have been open to the public in Japan or even in France. In 2006 however, the ownership of Riviere's works were passed on to the country after which research and presentation of Riviere's complete oeuvre has become possible. The Japanese involvement in this research led to the realization of this exhibition which will present for the first time the entire range of Riviere's artistic endeavor.
