"Itcho Returns: Retrospective of Hanabusa Itcho" Exhibition

Itabashi Art Museum
Finished

Hanabusa Itcho
Taga Choko was a representative painter of Genroku-era Edo (1688-1704), the flourishing city and its inhabitants. He earned the wrath of the shogunate, however, and was later banished to Miyakejima for 12 years.

In 1709, when the ruling shogun was replaced, he was granted amnesty and allowed to return to Edo, whereupon he took the name Hanabusa Itcho. 2009 marks the 300th anniversary of Itcho's remission.

The Itabashi Art Museum previously organized an exhibition of Itcho's works in 1984, but many of his pre-exile works have been discovered since then. This retrospective offers viewers a comprehensive survey of his work in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of his amnesty, including 2 works that have been designated Imporant Cultural Heritage.
