"The Future of Street Art: From Jamie Reid to Banksy" Exhibition

Bunkamura Museum of Art

Artists

Jamie Reid, Banksy et al.
London in the 1970s witnessed an unprecedented wave of unemployment amid a recession that eventually contributed to the rise of punk culture, a movement that encapsulated the feelings of a young generation with respect to contemporary society. Punk had a massive influence not only on fashion and art, but the whole of society in general. Jamie Reid was a pioneering graphic stylist who handled all the visual designs for the godfathers of punk, the Sex Pistols. Reid's work is now highly regarded as a fresh form of contemporary urban and graffiti art.

Following in Reid's footsteps are a new generation of artists raised on the streets of London and Bristol who have recently become the center of attention in European and American art circles - Banksy and Nick Walker being two prime examples. Using stencils and sprays, these artists started out making anti-war drawings and images focusing on political satire. In 2003, Banksy's work was used for the CD jacket of Blur's album "Think Tank," bringing these artists greater recognition that went in sync with the rise of the UK music scene.

This exhibition features over 100 original masterpieces by representative street artists like Jamie Reid and Banksy that are being shown for the first time, silkscreen prints and other works by more than 20 artists.
