Keiichi Tanaami, Pete Fowler
Paul Smith Space Gallery is holding a collaborative exhibition entitled "Dream Empire" by Keiichi Tanaami and Pete Fowler from August 1st through 23rd.

Tanaami began working as an artist starting in the 1960s. His practice centered on the "han-geijutsu" (anti-art) group Neo Dada Japan from the 60s through to the 70s, during which he exchanged ideas with Robert Rauschenberg and Michel Tapie among others and produced work in collaboration with Andy Warhol. He was a central figure in the nascent days of the postwar Japanese avant-garde, and a standard bearer of the flourishing counterculture that reflected a turbulent historical period marked by the Vietnam War, the revision of the security treaty between Japan and the US, the Cultural Revolution in China and the oil shock.

Born in Wales in 1969, Pete Fowler is an artist who creates "monster worlds." His works, incorporating postmodern manga-style techniques, portray a world of "monsterism" populated by weird creatures. His work has been used for CD jackets by the Welsh band Super Furry Animals.

Tanaami and Fowler met through a collaborative project done with the Animals, and planned this exhibition together. On display are a number of works fundamentally inspired by sound and the artwork from the Animals' album "Dark Days/Light Years." Tanaami's work is centered around a "mysterious journey to an alternate world." His new works, created through a process of editing, accumulating, selecting and combining countless fragments of images, represent personal memories of an "internal" journey. Fowler, on the other hand, shuttles between Tanaami's and his own imagination, creating psychedelic works with no restrictions.

All of these works will be on display and for sale for the duration of the exhibition.
