Tokyo Photographic Art Museum

Artists

Kazuyoshi Nomachi
Photographer Kazuyoshi Nomachi visited the Sahara desert in his 20s, where he was inspired by the massiveness of nature and the strength of people living in the challenging environment. Since then, he has been working in documentary photography.

Over 35 years, Nomachi traveled the regions around the Nile river, Ethiopia, Tibet, and Andes, documenting traditional cultures that are original to each environment. From 1995 to 2000, he was commissioned by the government of Saudi Arabia to photograph Mecca, the Holy Land of Islam, and their pilgrimage scenes. These photographs were published in his photo books and sold all over the world. Especially in the U.S. and Europe, a number of editions were reprinted. In 2005, Nomachi's photo book entitled "A Photographer's Pilgrimage," which contained his photographs capturing "prayers" from around the world in the past 30 years, was published in nine languages. This exhibition presents a total of 150 photographs by Nogami, including his most recent works taken around the Ganges, Iran and Andes as well as his representative works from the past.
