"Edo Food Culture and Imari-ware" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Toguri Museum of Art
Media: Crafts, Ceramics
During the 265 years in the Edo era, there were two periods that saw a particularly fervent cultural flourishing: the first was at the turn of the 18th century when prominent merchants emerged helped by the spread of monetary economy and the second at the turn of the next century when Edo had reached maturity as a city. In both cases it was the townspeople who were the fulcrum of this fervor. New cultural conventions came to life and with it the diet also changed causing alterations in the table ware. This exhibition presents imari-ware that featured prominently at Edo dinner tables, giving a chance to glimpse Edo food culture through its table ware.
