Mika Fujii "Creatures of Remembrance"

LIXIL Gallery 1 & 2

Artists

Mika Fujii
Mika Fujii's graceful ceramic objects include accumulations of thin pedal or feather-like frills. Gradations of faint blue and pink add a touch of lightness to the work, and the densely layered ceramic pieces create the impression of a life form about to wiggle and fly away. Fujii successfully extracts both elegant and dreamy sensations from hard white porcelain.

Unexpectedly, the armature of Fujii's work consists of thick comic books such as Shonen Jump. She dips them in clay slurry, shapes them into parts, and fires them, occasionally using lace to create decorative details.

Fujii is due to finish graduate school this March. Her exploration of forms continues to grow. In this first solo exhibition in Tokyo, she presents seven objects including her most recent works.
