The show will display again this year the works that have received prizes at "World Press Photo Contest" in the Netherlands that has been held yearly since 1955. This contest is open to all professional photographers and the submissions reached the highest number ever in the history of the competition with 96,268 works submitted by 5,508 photographers from 124 countries. Especially notable was the dramatic increase in submissions from China and India, pointing to the expansion of the places in the world in which photographers with an interest in social issues can flourish.

2 Japanese photographers were awarded prizes this year: Yasuyoshi Chiba who lieves and works in Kenya, and Hajime Yamaguchi who lives and works in the United States. They received prizes for the themes they each pursue.

The financial crisis that was triggered in the United States last year is now causing severe public insecurity even in economically more developed countries, and the world is now facing unprecedented social conditions. Wars and conflicts never cease. Many countries in Africa continue to be in the grip of civil war causing famine and massacre. Many of the victims are children. Those photographers stand at the forefront of those issues that appear around the world, and try to capture its essence with a keen understanding of the background to the events. The photographs on view that embody a message from these photographers must speak to us who live in the present time.
