Cecil Balmond
Cecil Balmond is a structural engineer who transcends the framework of structural engineering in his creative collaborations with architects. This exhibition explores the world of mathematics and algorithms behind the structures that Balmond envisages for architecture, demonstrating that they are based on the laws of nature. At one time it was thought that immobility was an unavoidable characteristic of architecture, but Balmond's structures bring dynamism. The roots of his work can be found in the growth of plants, in the rhythms of waves, in the flickering of flames, and in other familiar parts of the world around us. Through an introduction to Balmond's way of thinking, the exhibition shows how he elevated architectural structure from the level of technology to the level of philosophy.
