Artists

Jean Michel Alberola
Algerian-born French artist, Jean Michel Alberola (1953-) began his artistic career in the 1980s, exhibiting at the Venice Biennale in 1982 and teaching at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1991 while continuing his unique artistic production.

Alberola brings words and quotations into his works. The visual image of his works creates shiting tension with the meaning of his words, which contain a certain political ambiguity. The enigmatic images of the paintings reinforce the message contained in his words and the audience, interpreting the meaning on their own in bewilderment, comes into contact with the reality of the world envisioned by the artist.

The simple French title "Les Grands et les petits" signifies not only the actual size of the works, but also captures multi-layared and relative meanings which can also be understood as "adult and child" or "greatness and mediocrity". The title expresses the vast horizon of images that Alberola's words present in various changing shapes.
