Daisuke Katayama + Ami Ko Exhibition

Yukari Art Mini
Finished

Artists

Daisuke Katayama, Ami Ko
Daisuke Katayama has been creating sculptures and acrylic paintings since his student days in the sculpture department of Tokyo Zokei University. Katayama has been an avid fan of picture books since he was a child, when he used to play by himself, prone to daydreaming. Now an adult, he continues to portray fantastic, alternative worlds in his works. Katayama's works are perhaps an extension of the secret laboratories made out of cardboard and newspapers at the back of the house, the toy weapons, DIY golf courses made by digging holes and traps in the garden, and the picture books his mother used to read to him as a child.

Ami Ko works mainly with plaster and ceramic to make sculptures and installations. Ko is adept at making works with signs and traces of the everyday that take into account the personal narratives of people, but she also makes conceptual pieces that deal with her own roots as an ethnic Korean born in Japan. This exhibition features human faces made out of ceramic - "masks" that wear alternately beautiful and distorted expressions. As Ko remarks, these faces of "me and you" are always in some way a reflection of both the self and the other, whatever the expression on them may be.
