Kihachiro Okura, founder of the Okura Shukokan Museum of Fine Arts, was born in Shibata, Echigo (present Niigata prefecture) in 1837. He moved to Edo at the age of 18 during the turbulent days of the late Edo period and learned the basics of business. At the beginning of the Meiji period, he established various companies, playing a crucial role in the development of burgeoning industries in Japan. Through a display of his art collection and documents, this exhibition takes a close look at this stellar figure, who also devoted his life to educational work, charity projects and the preservation of cultural properties.
