From Japan's postwar period of recovery through to the period of high economic growth, numerous children's magazines were published. Among them, what attracted children the most were sci-fi publications that offered visions of the future.

The future, where anybody could travel through space, the skies filled with flying vehicles and streamlined high-speed cars. Cities crowded with skyscrapers and obedient robots, and super heroes fighting against invaders from space and fantastic monsters using chemical weapons. Exposed to such images featured in those magazines in the form of illustrations, picture stories and manga, children immersed themselves in various products of fantasy.

Centering on cover illustrations and frontispiece drawings by Shigeru Komatsuzaki, Tenan Ito, Tatsuji Kajita, Yoshiyuki Takani and others, this exhibition introduces viewers to the world of science fiction that flourished in Japan during the mid 20th century. Also on view are toys and stationery goods produced as a result of this sci-fi boom.
