Daniel Kelly
This exhibition will showcase new paintings and prints by Kyoto-based American contemporary artist Daniel Kelly. His career has produced an extensive and technically innovative body of work that is included in major museums around the world such as the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY MoMA, British Museum, and the Smithsonian. The paintings are provocative in the interplay between his realistic approach to painting and the underlying complex three-dimensional surfaces sculpted from materials such as tatami mats and handmade Nepalese paper. Woodblock prints utilize chine-colle of Japanese calligraphy on Nepalese paper. The rough and heavily textured surface of the paper, the absence of square edges, and the method of printing to the paper's edge are just three departures from conventional approaches to printmaking that characterize Kelly's work.
