This year marks the 40th anniversary of Galerie Tamenaga, which opened its doors in Ginza in 1969. The gallery is specialized in Western painting, presenting masterpieces by Modern painters. This exhibition features works by one of the representative painters of that category, Bernard Buffet.
Buffet was born in Paris in 1928, and in 1948, when he was at the age of 20, awarded the Critic's Prize, which is known as a gateway to success for painters. Scarcely less prolific than Picasso, he went on to establish his career and received the highest honor in France the National Order of the Legion of Honor in 1971. In 1999, as reaching the end of his practice, Buffet committed suicide.
Buffet's paintings which depict landscapes, interiors and human figures are comprised of sharp and dark contour lines, emotionally expressing the alienation of human life in the postwar era.
This exhibition takes place in the renewed gallery space, retrospectively presenting about 50 paintings by this notable artist.
