"Banner Flags from the Edo Period" Exhibition

The Shoto Museum of Art
Finished
Banner flags that were used for decorative purposes in Shinto festivals was one of the most representative forms of pictorial art enjoyed by people in the Edo period together with ukiyoe prints and ema paintings. The great pride people took in exhibiting a sumptuous banner flag is reflected in the gorgeous paintings depicting courageous warriors and calligraphy by renowned masters. These flags are a testament of the richness of mass culture during the Edo period.

This exhibition will recreate such a world in order to instigate a reappraisal of the pictorial expression in banner flags which has so far been sidelined.
