Mustone's exhibition "Yokai" is his first in 3 years at Nanzuka Underground, where he will be presenting new works that use silicon resin - a radical difference from the oil pastel canvases of his previous work.
Mustone has been carrying out original research into the world of traditional Japanese spirits and monsters of the mountains and rivers, or "yokai," as the basis of his creative activity. By turns comical and serious, evil and good, yokai have been portrayed in different ways. Mustone focuses on the spiritual condition of man as someone attracted to these creatures.
Feelings of mystery and awe that we are able to feel from time to time are crucial elements in Mustone's works. As the word "yadoru", to dwell, exemplifies, Mustone portrays yokai as something that human beings can only perceive when their senses are acutely tuned. This is why Mustone's yokai depictions have little to do with stereotypes.
Mustone has carefully selected the motifs for the works on display based on his own special experiences. The works are the very expression of his own search for the "pleasure" through which he can be healed. They speak of such sensitivity that can be shared by all.
