Jonathan Meese
Jonathan Meese works with a wide array of media such as painting, sculpture, installation and performance. He often takes historically prominent German figures like Wagner and Hitler as motifs, while also depicting Hollywood stars, characters from fairy tales and manga stories, creating a chaotic world filled with a sense of humor and danger. Last year at Yokohama Triennale, Meese executed an installation and performance in a space whose wall was covered with big letters "Dictatorship of Art". As drawing laughs with the use of a random collection of things like stuffed animals and a portrait of Scarlett Johansson, he imitated "Heil Hitler" pose once in a while, scattering "Yokohama Manifest" flyers and agitating the audience. Through such a performance, Messe revealed the earnestness of his effort to explore the ultimate possibility of art that can function as powerful propaganda.

While details remain a secret, this Tokyo-born German artist is holding an exhibition on the theme of his Japanese hero Yukio Mishima.
