Artists

Shiko Munakata
It was Muneyoshi Yanagi, the founder of the museum, who discovered the talent of Shiko Munakata (1903-1975) as a painter. Well acquainted with the leaders of the Craft Movement such as Yanagi, Kanjiro Kawai and Shoji Hamada, Munakata experienced firsthand the philosophy of craft making advocated by Yanagi: "a creator is not yourself but some sort of force that transcends your own and gives the work form." Heavily influenced by this consciousness, Munakata absorbed artistic sustenance from craft and came to produce works that exuded a sense of vitality. While best known for his prints, Munakata was also an adept calligrapher and painter of yamatoga, a sub-genre of nihonga. These two media allowed him to execute works in a freer and more direct way compared to printmaking.

From the museum collection, this exhibition showcases a total of around 100 yamatoga and calligraphy pieces created between the mid 1930s and 1950s, introducing viewers to the artistry of this prominent figure.
