This event has ended.

Paul Klee (1879-1940) is one of the most representative painters of the 20th century. His works have been widely shown in Japan, but the fact that Klee had a direct connection with oriental art - Japanese art in particular - is little known. From 1905-8, Klee attempted numerous works that were modeled after Hokusai's prints - an inspiration for Klee, who was seeking a form of pictorial expression based on generating sculptural qualities with lines at the time.

This exhibition will show such early works that show the direct relationship between Klee and ukiyo-e woodblock prints, as well as later works that employ Asian forms such as calligraphy and symbols.
