Yoshimasa Tsuchiya
Born in 1977 in Kanagawa Prefecture, Yoshimasa Tsuchiya studied woodcarving in the sculpture department of Tokyo University of the Arts, and went on to complete his masters in the study of classical sculpture and Ph.D.in the conservation of cultural property. Based on the traditional Buddhist statue techniques, Tsuchiya has been producing wooden sculptures using hinoki (Japanese cypress) and crystals. His attempt to depict a fictional world taking mythological and imaginary creatures as motifs reflects his background in practicing Buddhist art which embodies the existence of another world.
On the theme of "dream", Tsuchiya presents sculptures in a state of sleeping, dosing and dreaming. This whole exhibition is realized by the inspiration he drew from his own dreams. Images and stories envisaged in his dreams are about to materialize in the real world.
