"Colors of the Sea, Shapes of the Sea" Exhibition

Artizon Museum
Finished
This exhibition of paintings on the subject of the sea will introduce a cornucopia of styles and viewpoints with which artists address the sea. The sea itself has no determinate color or shape. Nonetheless, artists have found many ways to depict it.

Some present a horizon stretching off into the distance, waves, light reflecting from them, and color; some portray shipping channels or seaside bathing spots. Sometimes symbolic images reminiscent of creatures found in the ocean depths are depicted as if floating in the air in Surrealistic or abstract paintings.

The sea, the setting in the Bible, myths, and many tales for the creation of the world and the origin of life, is a presence that often inspires awe or longing. Its power as a source of artistic inspiration thus reaches far beyond the genre of landscape—or seascape--painting.The four parts of this exhibition address the sea in terms of shape, color, motif, and image. We hope it will offer an opportunity to relish one aspect of the museum’s collection through the eternal theme of the sea.
