Yasunari Kawabata + Yukihiko Yasuda Exhibition

Chiba City Museum of Art

Artists

Yukihiko Yasuda et al.
Writer Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972) is the author of masterpieces such as "The Dancing Girl of Izu" and "Snow Country" that are at the root of lyrical depictions of traditional beauty in Japanese literature. In 1968, he became the first Japanese author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Painter Yukihiko Yasuda (1884-1978) created historical paintings with graceful brushstrokes and refined colors, which reflect his deep understanding of ancient history. He was also a devoted researcher of Buddhist monk Ryoukan, and left behind many works that show his research.

In 1948, Yasuda created the cover illustration for Kawabata's complete works, and the two formed a unique bond. What tightened their relationship was that they both loved antique art. Yasuda was also an art collector, and whenever Kawabata found an interesting piece, he brought it from Kamakura to Oiso to share his appreciation with Yasuda. Antiques were a source of exploration of Japanese beauty and tradition.

This exhibition presents a total of 250 works, including antique artworks that once belonged to Kawabata and Yasuda, respected Ryoukan calligraphy, and Yasuda's paintings. These works represent a traditional Japanese aesthetic developed by these notable figures for over 24 years.
