Among the vivid primary colors employed by Taro Okamoto for his paintings, the one that leaves the strongest impression on the viewers is red. From the days when Okamoto traveled to Paris to become an abstract painter to the 1980s, the artist continued to use red in a highly symbolic manner. It is said that the experience of learning about the sacrificial ceremonies of ancient Mexico and the drama of blood left a strong impression on Okamoto as a child. For him red became the color of pulsating blood, of the sun that condenses the essence of life. It became more than just a color. After the 1960s during which the artist introduced calligraphy-style forms into his paintings, red became even more prominently featured with symbolic import. This is an unmissable chance to witness the use of red by one of the masters of Japanese modern art.
